Frankfurt Airport opens Terminal 3 – building automation engineered with WSCAD software

WSCAD congratulates Fraport AG on the milestone of Terminal 3. The opening of the new southern extension at Frankfurt Airport marks a key step in the implementation of one of Europe’s largest infrastructure projects in the fields of aviation and building services engineering.

With over 90,000 data points and approximately 150,000 automation functions, Terminal 3 is among the most complex building automation projects in Europe. This scale requires a continuous, consistent engineering structure across all project phases – from design through execution to documentation.

The specialist design of the building automation system was carried out by CANZLER GmbH. Fraport Ausbau Süd GmbH acted as the client and central project authority for the implementation of the southern extension.

In the engineering process, WSCAD software was used for the structured design and development of the building automation system. A key focus was the consistent and continuous definition of data points across all disciplines and design levels. Equally important was the standards-based structuring in accordance with IEC 81346, ensuring a clear and systematic representation of technical systems and automation functions.

The high number of data points and the functional complexity of building automation in an airport environment place particular demands on data consistency, standardisation, and change management. The use of digitally supported engineering methods helped reduce information gaps between disciplines and establish a unified data foundation for all project stakeholders.

In addition, the structured approach enables a traceable representation of automation functions throughout the entire project lifecycle – from design and implementation through to the operational phase.

The Terminal 3 project serves as an example of how complex building automation in large-scale infrastructure projects can be implemented efficiently, transparently, and consistently through standardised, software-supported engineering processes.
